As a part-time project associate, Jana contributes to our Valuing Respect Project focused on finding better ways to evaluate business respect for human rights. Trained as a political economist, her experience in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) from rights-holders’ perspectives in the areas of mining and impact investment is of particular relevance to the project.
Prior to joining Shift, Jana led and contributed to assessments of socially responsible investments in microentrepreneurial space in the Johannesburg region and mining investments in South Africa. Jana has experience in designing strategies for maximum positive impacts for local communities, microentrepreneurs, and other rights-holders. During her doctoral studies, Jana engaged with mine-affected communities in rural South Africa. She is experienced in conducting in-depth interviews and focus groups with community members, traditional leaders and policy-makers.
Jana is an author of several peer-reviewed publications on inequality, impacts of international investments on workers and communities and development finance. Jana holds a PhD from University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa and a Master’s Degree in Development Studies from the Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University, the Netherlands.
