Professor Philip Alston
Philip is a John Norton Pomeroy Professor of Law at New York University (NYU), where he co-chairs the NYU Center for Human Rights and Global Justice. He has held numerous high-level human rights positions in the United Nations, most recently being the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions. Previous roles include membership of the Group of Experts on Darfur appointed by the UN Human Rights Council in 2007; Special Advisor to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the Millennium Development Goals; Chair of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights for eight years; and legal advisor to UNICEF during the drafting of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Philip has taught at the Fletcher School, Harvard Law School and been a Professor of Law at the Australian National University and the European University Institute. Philip is an Australian national currently living in the US.
